New-MHA-Committee600MHA Committee 2013/14 (from left) Mr George Portelli, Mr Charles Portelli, Mr Charles Gatt, Mr Joseph Borg, Mr Mario Bonnici, Mr Lewis Zammit and Mrs Agnes CauchiA Special General Meeting was held by the Maltese Historical Association at the Maltese Community Centre in Parkille on Tuesday 3 December.  This was a critical meeting that could have resulted in the winding up of the association if insufficient committee members were elected. The meeting was called as there were no candidates for key committee positions at the Annual General Meeting held in November.

The SGM was well attended and all positions on the committee were filled. The general feeling at the meeting was very positive and encouraging.

The composition of the new Committee for 2013/14 is as follows:
President:               Joseph Borg
Vice President:       George Portelli
Secretary:             Charles Gatt
Treasurer:             Mario Bonnici
Members:              Agnes Cauchi, Charles Portelli and Lewis Zammit

The MHA has been running for 25 years and wishes to encourage and welcome young people and instil in them a love of Maltese history and culture.

New President Joseph Borg encouraged members to consider researching and giving a presentation to the group. The MCCV library is the best Maltese library outside Malta and there are many resources on the Internet, e.g. Vassallomalta. It is just a matter of choosing a topic of interest, reading and summarizing information for a presentation.

The social committee was commended for its fantastic effort.

Professor Maurice Cauchi suggested that if people have any books they don't want, especially on Maltese History, they may like to donate them to the library. He has collected talks from the last 10 years and they will be made available in due course on the MHA website.

A number of suggestions for future MHA Events including :

  • Trivia nights
  • "What is it? where is it?"
  • Sharing skills in model building
  • Melita historica
  • Albert Farrugia's A History of Malta through stamps
  • French arrival in Malta in 8 vignettes
  • the history of Maltese in Australia
  • Green Gully soccer

A group presentation rather than a solo lecture may be less daunting for some. Members are asked to bring a list of topics to the next meeting.

Suggestions to attract new members included approaching Dr Claudia Sagona's archaeology students and students from Vic Uni, reviving our facebook page and attracting young Maltese learning Maltese, for example through the language immersion programme.

Skype could be used to communicate live with lecturers in Malta.

Finally Lewis Zammit read out a tribute to outgoing President Mrs Frances Bonnici and the retiring committee members, commending them for their outstanding work.
